9 Huge Video Games You Forgot Were Coming In 2019
2. Code Vein
Release date: TBA 2019
Dark Souls is done. Dusted. Finito. From Software has closed that chapter in its history and continues to press on with new adventures in the form of action-oriented Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Maybe you've heard of it?
But where does that leave those looking for their next dose of the 'Soulsborne' drug? In wake of Dark Souls' end, series' publisher Bandai Namco has been left with two options: bring in another developer and lump them with the unenviable task of putting together a sequel to the original trilogy, or start fresh with an intellectual property that wears its inspiration on its sleeve. For everyone's benefit, it decided to pursue the latter option, the result of which is Code Vein.
The anime-inspired character designs will be an instant turn-off for many, but transplanting all of the gameplay systems Dark Souls popularised into a new world not saddled with all of the series' past baggage is the fresh-but-familiar angle that helps to ward off stagnation. The primary hope is that Bandai doesn't play it too safe and takes a punt with new ideas to further the formula.
In the meantime, if you absolutely can't wait to scratch the Souls itch, do yourself a favour and check out A44's Ashen. You'll love it. Promise.
