Another case of a game's climax leaving a monumentally sour taste, Prince of Persia's 2008 reboot closed out with one of the most dour, "everyone actually dies" finales in gaming history. Predicated on the Prince deciding to resurrect his lover Elika over saving the rest of the world, unless you actively turned the game off, the way it all played out undid the entire game's progression, being you were working towards stopping the evil Ahriman and cleansing the land otherwise.

The ending shot is literally the Prince carrying Elika off as the world falls into darkness around him, leading to many thrown controllers and a LOT of angry forum posts.

Ubisoft eventually relented, announcing the "Epilogue" DLC that showed both the Prince and Elika were still alive in his world-gone-south, yet managed to mess everything up even more. Epilogue addressed the Prince's decision by having Elika get repeatedly annoyed about bringing her back, but it almost felt like the writers saying, "Oh, is this what you wanted?! A dead Elika?!" as the final scene is her abandoning the Prince on a balcony to find the rest of her people.

Yup... it's the Poochie ending, but at least fans got something out of Ubisoft for all their activism.
