1. Brutal Legend
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyHQLg-O0P0 The Brutal Legend demo was a blast. The writing was warm and nuanced (as you'd expect from Tim Schafer, the man responsible for Grim Fandango, Psychonauts and Monkey Island), the world was fully-realised - realms of fantasy and metal melded perfectly - and the combat system looked like a lot of fun, especially the ability to use a well-timed guitar solo to blast your foes. The demo perfectly sold the game as a heavy metal God of War. The problem, was that past that intro it was something else entirely. It wasn't just the demo, but all of the game's marketing portrayed it as a hack n' slash (n' humour) action game, when in actual fact it was a Real Time Strategy, the second half revolving around coordinating battles between magical armies. Again, the game isn't terrible, but the sheer balls of the deception at play hugely impacts its appeal. If RTS' aren't your thing (and Brutal Legend is quite an ill-at-ease, simplistic RTS at that) the anger everyone felt at not being able to complete a game they bought because it's a completely different beast than what's been shown, is maddening. It's not the worst game on this list (take a bow, Sonic Unleashed), but in terms of a demo setting up its game to fail, Brutal Legend takes the horned crown.
