9 Misleading Video Game Demos That Totally Lied To You

4. Sonic Unleashed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dArm1S-MIo The Sonic Unleashed demo is a classic example of something offering you only the choicest cuts of meat, before the full game reveals itself to nothing more than dry bone and wasted potential. One of the 'Day' levels (the game was split into Day, Night and Adventure levels) these were by far and away the best parts of the game. Feeling at once like classic Sonic - the focus being on momentum and precise timing - and new-and-improved Sonic, offering sweeping camera shots and quick-reaction quicktime events to access secret portions of the level. It was trial and error but Sega fans are used to that, and the feel of speed and momentum were so right, expectations were high that Unleashed would return the Hedgehog to his former glory. Then everything went wrong when the Werehog arrived. During the nighttime sections, the game's momentum slams to a stop so violently that you'd expect a shower of rings to burst out of your console. Sonic transforms into a giant lumbering hairy beast with stretchy arms called a Werehog (sure) and the game transforms into a horribly dull brawler. Huge stretches of the game require you to fight waves of enemies doing the same few moves over and over again for tediously long stretches at a time. The adventure sections are rubbish too, forcing you to hunt for tokens in order to unlock more of the game, whilst also enduring the nighttime levels that are bad already, without making you partake in the occasional treasure hunt. Anyone who bought the game on the strength of the demo must have genuinely felt mugged.
