The Call of Duty cycle is real. Every year everyone swears off the franchise as being done. Then the new game is teased, and cautious optimism begins to set in. Then it's properly unveiled, and everyone is suckered in by the amazing trailers. Then it comes out, and critics and fans proclaim it as the "best one in years" or "the best since Black Ops/Modern Warfare 2". Then a few months go by and everyone turns on it, and the cycle repeats.

The part of that tradition that's almost become a meme at this point though, is every new game being heralded as the best instalment in years. Since Advanced Warfare, every new COD gets lavished with this same praise, to the point where it's become meaningless.

If every new game is the best one in years, what does that mean for the last one which was also heralded as the sequel that got the series back on track? It's like everyone forgets they played a COD 12 months ago, and said all the same things they're currently saying about the new one they're currently enjoying.
