7. Snake vs. Liquid Ocelot - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

This entry isn’t unique in its grotesque presentation or previously unheard of fighting mechanics, but because of what a stand out moment it is in the Metal Gear franchise and how perfectly it represents Snake and Ocelot’s lifelong battle that has consumed both of their lives.

For fans of the series this final stand off is intensely emotional and impactful.

With that especially unique Kojima magic, this battle evolves through different genres, HUDs, and soundtrack changes to reflect every other time the two have fought in the series’ history. There’s 2D elements in there, health bars, classic fighter mechanics, and all sorts of components you won’t have encountered before this point in the game. In the end, there’s a sadness and a tragedy to watching these old men grapple with each other, both victims to a pointless war. This scene perfectly encapsulates what you’ll have gone through by this point as a player and what these characters have sacrificed and become.

There’s not much I can say that will do justice to how well executed, clever, and intense this fight is but if you haven’t seen it for yourself you should really change that.
