The Wii U has played host to some fan-pleasing, family-friendly classics during its lifecycle - from the ever-reliable Mario Kart 8 to the deathmatch-reinventing Splatoon - yet its limp launch lineup failed to make a dent in PlayStation or Xbox profits.

Okay, so it did have New Super Mario Bros. U and ZombiU, but the machine’s day-one offering was heavily diluted by previous-generation ports and gimmicky mini-game compilations.

Although one might argue that few consoles boast a vast library of stellar games at launch, the Wii U also failed to deliver on the quantity front, with many top third-party developers approaching the platform with caution, a point we'll get to shortly.
