As this is an Animal Crossing game, the island is your oyster. With a collection of critters to catch, trees to fell and seeds to plant, it's up to you to build your island paradise. Every island is unique and it's a good idea to start exploring once you have the tools to do so in order to locate specific reserves ripe for harvesting. The ladder allows you to climb to previously out of reach locations and the pole allows you to hop over rivers, but before you can get these items, you will need to make use of the resources at your disposal in your starting area.

There are rocks on the island that hide treasure, stone or iron that can be unearthed with the spade, whereas trees can be shaken or cut down for wood. Fossils can be dug up and fish and bugs can be caught to donate or sold to generate money. You might even see balloons hovering past holding presents which can be shot down with the slingshot to reward you with items.

If you're out late at night you might find other animals such as moths or even ghosts wandering the island. Some bugs are only out in the morning and others are attracted to certain flowers, so exploring your island at different times is a great way to start collecting. As the game time is reflective of your actual time, you may may have to plan your schedule to coincide with your gameplay, or else resort to the tried and tested calendar exploit of changing your console date setting
