Another case of a superhero video game which had already nailed it with the first ending, we’ve got Batman: Arkham Knight.

While there are multiple endings, the most complete sees our caped crusader revealing his identity to the world thus triggering the Knightfall Protocol wherein our hero disappears into Wayne Manor at which point it explodes. We then see a wealthy family being threatened by muggers before a Batman-looking figure sets upon them, presumably taking up the hero mantle. It’s an ambiguous but very cool ending that has spawned all kinds of theories ruminating on Bruce’s true fate and what it could all mean. Almost inevitably, then, it makes all the following story DLC, especially the Gotham City Stories which don’t feature our favourite Bats fall a little short.

Topping the chart of the most disappointing additions to undermine the original ending, though, is Batgirl: A Matter of Family.

The DLC isn’t out and out awful but it casts an awkward light on Batman’s absence that’s hard to ignore, and the hour of content makes it feel so lacking fans were a little puzzled as to why WB Montreal bothered at all. It comes off like a cash-in, not a meaningful contribution to the lore and backstory. While controlling Batgirl was cool, if your Batman: Arkham journey ended with this instead of the Knightfall ending, you’d be a little disappointed.
