6. Kiryu Fakes His Death - Yakuza 6: The Song Of Life
The latest entry into the core Yakuza franchise was hyped up as a final farewell to beloved protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, and though many fans expected Kiryu to finally meet his maker at the end, he surprisingly made it out in one piece, though just barely.
After defeating the final boss, Kiryu is shot protecting his adoptive niece Haruka, her infant son Haruto and the baby's father, Yuta.
In a devastating sequence, Kiryu appears to die, but if you hang around for the credits, the epilogue reveals that this isn't the case at all.
In the end, Kiryu decides to fake his death in order to ensure Haruka and Haruto are safe, even if it means never being able to see them again.
The poignant final moments show Kiryu walking off juxtaposed against young Haruto taking his first steps, and while it's a fundamentally ridiculous ending given how badly wounded Kiryu was, would you honestly expect anything less from Yakuza?
You can argue it would've been more narratively water-tight for Kiryu to die for real, but damn if this didn't get the waterworks going all the same.
