9 Video Games With Seriously Morbid Background Lore

7. Splatoon

Yes, Splatoon may look like family-friendly fun, but beneath its simplistic surface layer is a dark secret; one that changes how you'll view this seemingly innocuous game of paint wars and vibrant squids forever.

Collect all of Splatoon's hidden scrolls and you'll discover the origins of game's universe. These will start with some light-hearted pictures and jokes, but it doesn't take long to realise that the game's colourful world has a majorly dark history.

Turns out that Splatoon doesn't take place in a fictional universe. It takes place after our world was wiped out by rising sea levels, meaning the battlegrounds our squid friends fight upon are built on the remnants of mass human extinction. As if that's not bad enough, the scrolls hide images of squids gradually evolving into humanoid creatures, the design itself implying the animal slowly grew to seize our place in society.

We also learn that the rise of the Inklings hasn't been all fun and games, their past including a devastating war with an evolved form of Octopus known as the Octarians over who deserved to claim the over-world.

The moral of the story? Maybe we should start doing our bit for climate change so we don't incite a harrowing oceanic war.
