9 Ways Resident Evil 7 Is Already Better Than 6
3. It's Risky As Hell
Speaking to Gamespot, Director Masachika Kawata stated that the team actually began work on a first-person instalment of Resident Evil, long before P.T. was even seen. He noted that the change-up is a "return to horror" (somewhat admitting that the last few games have been anything but), and all-round, stated that the decision to take the series back to its roots was consumer and fan-driven.
But that said, it's still a major risk, because aside from a couple of lightgun games, Resident Evil has never been first-person. And in fact, it feels like Capcom are saying, "Okay, okay, we'll do a 'proper' horror game again... but we're still changing some things up."
To that end, controls are completely different, the lore is taking a backseat to help showcase a new story about character Ethan and the search for his missing wife, the perspective is obviously different, and so is the feel of combat.
You could go so far as to question why it's a Resident Evil game at all, but I can only assume those ties are going to make themselves known once the story gets going. Whether Capcom can pull this off not only dictates Resident Evil returning to the throne as the king of survival horror, but also the direction of the franchise from here on out.
Will we see future instalments locked in the first-person model, whilst the likes of RE: Revelations continues in third? Who knows, but all eyes are on Capcom to get everything right if this is to be viewed as a statement of intent.
