Unless you land in a high-tier or hot-drop loot area, you'll typically find a lot of Alternators during the opening minutes of the game - along with a bunch of Mozambiques, P2020s, and Wingmans. The Mozambique and P2020 are practically useless and should be avoided where possible, but the Wingman (more on this one later) and the Alternator are definitely worth swiping.

The Alternator is a full-auto SMG that uses light ammo rounds, so bullets are rarely in short supply. Its high rate of fire and decent damage output make it best-equipped for close-quarters encounters, so if you land in a tight area, it will serve you well - especially when early-game opponents rarely have a body shield.

But while it can shred those unarmoured (or level-one-armoured) enemies quite easily, it will start to let you down as the game progresses and your opponents get stronger armour and guns. The Alternator is a good early-game weapon - something to use while you hunt down weak opponents who landed in your zone - but once things settle down and you can loot in peace, try to swap it out for something better when you can.
