Assassin's Creed: 10 Most Shocking & Heartbreaking Moments

1. The Ending (Black Flag)

To be honest, the number one spot could really go to a number of moments in Black Flag, which has arguably provided players with one of the richest and most emotional stories in the series.

Edward Kenway's tale is a tragic one, despite his eventual redemption as an Assassin, when we see all that he loses because of his selfishness and greed. Even though we know he turns good in the end, it comes at the cost of the lives of many who loved him and believed in him.

But it is the epilogue of the main story which summarises all of his self-felt pain deeply. Looking out to the shores of the Caribbean, facing an uncertain future as he waits for his new-found daughter Jennifer to arrive, he sees visions of those he has lost, all gathered once more to send him on the next stage of his life.

The scene is directed beautifully and is set to one of the saddest and most beautiful songs in the series, as Edward is finally forced to confront his own responsibility and regrets as he goes to greet Jennifer, and sees in her an opportunity for him to be a better man. It really is the perfect ending to a perfect game.
