El Dorado is one of the most legendary mysteries to have emerged from the golden era of piracy, and is paid homage to in one of the most subtle nods in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag.

Originating as a story from the Spanish Empire, the El Dorado legend told the tale of a supposed great leader who ruled over a race of people indigenous to Colombia and was so wealthy he covered himself in gold dust and precious minerals. The legend would evolve over the years so that El Dorado would grow from a king to a great city, and would prompt countless expeditions over the years with Sir Walter Raleigh being arguably the most famous of these looking for prestige and riches.

The legend of El Dorado has been portrayed in plenty of films and shows over the years, and Black Flag is no different.

Edward Kenway's Jackdaw ship is at the centre of the game, but what some players might have missed out on was the original name of the brig before it's stolen by the pirates. The ship is called 'El Dorado' in the game, meaning 'the golden one' in Spanish, and as well as being a nice nod to some real pirate lore, is a good representation of what drives Kenway on as a person, particularly at the time of him stealing the ship.
