Thankfully, thankfully, the version of Assassin's Creed's timeline is routed more in its earlier instalments, and not the last few, which saw the formerly 'muahaha'-ing Abstergo Industries go from being a bunch of evil Templar scientists, into... a video game manufacturer?

Yes, any newcomers to the AC franchise should know that the direction Ubisoft took was to change your present-day character into a tester on a video game. That video game being... Assassin's Creed. It was a way for them to be all self-aware, channeling the memory-finding tech of the Animus machine and acting like it was a real-world device - thereby making Ubisoft an actual company in their own series as they partnered with Abstergo.

Kinda cool, but also insanely limiting when it came to spinning any future plot threads.

In the movie, Marion Cotillard's Sofia Rikkin (daughter of head honcho, Alan Rikkin) wakes Fassbender's Callum Lynch with news that they've not only faked his death, but that he'll be getting forced to use the Animus, assumedly to pursue Evil Deeds. This is very close to how Desmond was held prisoner by Doctor Warren Vidic in AC1, as Kristen Bell's helper Lucy Stillman slowly aided in his escape. A potential arc for Sofia?
