Speaking of Joker, the key to writing him in a way that lives up to his regal nickname - he is a Clown PRINCE, after all - is to nail his unpredictability.

See, the reason both he and Batman work as oppositional constructs in an entertaining framework, is the audience should never be able to keep up with the whims of either. In Arkham Asylum, we don't know Joker's full plan and neither does Bats, but consequently, Joker doesn't know Batman has a hidden Batcave on Arkham Island, nor does Batman get remotely flustered dealing with the many things thrown his way.

Why? Because he's the World's Greatest Detective, and the player isn't.

It's these contrasting elements that lets the audience go along for the ride, allows Joker to be 'playful' and brutally violent, yet always keeps the audience on the right side of both characters.

In turn, we adore embodying Batman, methodically taking down the character of Joker in all his glory, not just ticking a final villain off a list, as was the case with Hugo Strange, Arkham Knight or Scarecrow.
