Batman: Arkham Insurgency - 11 Things It Must Learn From Asylum
4. Boss Placement & Variety
Weirdly, despite them being a much talked-about feature in Asylum and things like the Mr. Freeze/Deathstroke fights in City and Origins being spectacular, Arkham Knight did away with boss fights for the majority, save for some truly terrible tank-based interactions in a sewer pipe.
Back to Asylum, and we had everything from figuring out how to take down a screen-sized Poison Ivy to dodging Bane's charges, stealthily avoiding Killer Croc, Scarecrow's nightmare, and well, Titan Joker... but at least they all came with what Arkham Knight completely missed - Variety.
And not just variations in their mechanics, but the pace at which you encounter them feels planned and perfected. Many new areas are ramp-ups of that individual's character, spread out and interacted with, before the final face-off tops off the section and you move on accordingly.
Contrasted against the sequels, what would be those levels were scattered around the map, interacted with and forgotten about, or - worse yet - ticked off a list like the Most Wanted missions, barely lasting more than a few minutes.
Batman's Rogues Gallery as a set of villains are some of the absolute finest in the history of comics, so make sure they're a constant part of the experience, forever reminding Bruce of his own various character traits.
