Batman: Arkham Knight - 10 Big Story Moments Fans Will Debate For Years

2. Did The 'Big Alliance' Really Live Up To The Hype?

From the very getgo of Knight's announcement it was clear that Rocksteady wished to emphasise the point that the villains would now be working together to take down the Bat, unlike Arkham City where they were competing with each other to exert control over the area. There's no denying that the finale had a formidable cast of characters, but whether that alliance lived up to expectations is an entirely different matter altogether. For better or for worse Rocksteady saw fit to include two of the alliance's biggest hitters - Penguin and Two Face - as minor side missions situated way away from the main story's content. Penguin's motif to make a quick profit is very fitting and his side missions with Nightwing are actually a lot of fun, but one can't help but feel as though the developers didn't really know what to do with Two Face - making him rob banks in Knight because well...he likes to rob banks, right? Obviously Harvey was meant to be financing Cobblepot's operation, but what exactly were the two doing to actively kill Batman? Nothing really. In fact, the only member of the alliance apart from Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight to actually take a role in attempting to kill Batman in the main story was Harley Quinn - a far cry away from being the alliance players were promised when Knight made its first trailer début. As it stands the nefarious 'team isn't wholly detrimental to Knight's narrative, but it's hard to argue against the fact that gamers were misled in its marketing.
Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
