Batman: Arkham Knight - 10 Perfect Ways To Kill Batman
8. Carrying The Legacy
One big theme of Batman's mantle is that it is an idea, a construct that cannot be destroyed simply by murdering the man or woman who wields it. This hypothesis was put to the test in the aftermath of Bruce's death in the events of Final Crisis, which triggered a so called 'Battle for the Cowl', with one clear hero emerging as the victor. In the ensuing months, writer Grant Morrison reiterated the case that Batman as an idea cannot be destroyed, and that those who share his values could take on the cowl if they so desired. This resulted in some of the best Batman stories to have been told in years - all with Dick Grayson as the Dark Knight himself. Sadly, we've not really seen much if any development of characters able to take on Bruce's escapades as the Bat, but that doesn't mean we might not see another hero don the Batsuit in Bruce's memory. As noted previously, Knight appears to be emphasising the role allies have on Batman's crime fighting - a theme that has transitioned from the events of Harley Quinn's Revenge in that he constantly neglects them when he needs them most. Outside of the Bat mythos, this worked particularly well in Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption. Taking on the role of Jack Marston to avenge your father's death was a master stroke and ended the story perfectly. If Rocksteady could pull off such a thing in Knight, it would be the absolute pinnacle of the Arkhamverse as we know it.
