Battlefield 5 Battle Royale: Everything We Know So Far

2. Ring Of Fire

In order to prevent players just camping in one spot, PUBG, Fortnite, and other Battle Royale games use a shrinking playable area, generally known as the 'safe zone', with some kind of damaging force or storm gradually covering the rest of the map. In Firestorm, the playable area will be surrounded by a huge, destructive ring of fire that gradually grows smaller over time.

It'll be interesting to see how this mechanic plays out. In Fortnite and PUBG, players can actually stay outside the safe zone for a short period, gradually taking damage over time until they make it into the safe zone. However, walking through a massive wall of flames is probably going to lead to instant-death, so it could turn out that players need to remain in the safe zone at all times while playing Firestorm.

The ring of fire also affects the map, destroying everything in its path. The latest trailer shows a couple of buildings crumbling and falling to the ground as soon as they come into contact with the flames, so players will need to think carefully about where they decide to hide out or risk getting crushed under all that rubble.
