Battlefield V Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
EA's latest shooter isn't the disaster you've been led to believe it is.
After a tumultuous year mired in controversy, backlash and community discontent, Battlefield V has finally scraped onto shelves. However, all of the discussions and questions surrounding the game pre-launch have obfuscated the most important one: is it actually any good?
Though it's been reductively dubbed as "Battlefield 1.5" by some fans, DICE have made some pretty monumental changes to the classic multiplayer formula, opting for more "immersive" gameplay and a new attrition system. This is all alongside doubling down on their single-player War Stories as well, in an era where most big-budget shooters are dropping campaigns altogether.
The game had big boots to fill, and an uphill battle to fight, but these alterations and additions - along with the expansive Grand Operations mode - have made for one of the most ambitious releases the developers have ever produced. And with a roadmap planned into next year that's going to add a whole host of new content, it seems as though EA believes in the sequel's longevity.
While it all sounds great on paper, not everything works, and the final result has made for one of the most fascinating - and undoubtedly the most divisive - entries in the franchise yet.
