Before GTA V: Ranking Best To Worst Grand Theft Auto Games

2. Grand Theft Auto 2

Released in late 1999, Grand Theft Auto 2 expanded upon its predecessor's freedom in gaming. The graphics have a much smoother and softer appearance. The sounds are improved, and the game has an overall better feel to it - impressive for only two years in a young industry. GTA 2 is the only Rockstar-developed game in the series to be set in an undisclosed setting. The location is referred to as "Anywhere, USA" and the time-period is never clarified (while it is debated as to whether it takes place in the late 1990s or closer to 2013). This second game is honestly not that different from the first, but for the sole reason that it managed to be just as good as the original slides it into the position of second best in the Grand Theft Auto series - and second best in its 2D universe.
