Bioshock Infinite: 10 Important Details You Didn't Notice
2. There Is Subtle, Early Hint That The Lutece Twins Are Not Quite Alive
The eccentric Lutece twins are one of the game’s many highlights, a witty, deceptively powerful duo with a love of things philosophical who guide Booker and Elizabeth through their adventures in Columbia and who are central to the game’s plot.
And in a stunning end-game reveal you learn that they are both dead...in a manner of speaking.
When you first meet them in Columbia, the duo rope you into a game of heads or tails, a game where the coin always comes up heads.
This is a reference to the play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, where an equally eccentric, witty and philosophical duo, in a play with similar themes of predestination and free will, play a game of heads and tails with the exact same result.
Come the end of the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are both executed, echoing what has already happened to the Luteces.
Though no doubt lost on the vast majority of players, this slick bit of exposition will be obvious to those who enjoy their theatre, offering a delightfully clever insight into exactly how the Luteces are able to do the seemingly impossible, and what is truly going in Columbia.
