Call Of Duty: 10 Huge Controversies Activision Wants You To Forget
7. London Chemical Attacks
After the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the publisher came under pressure for one part of the campaign which showed the moment Russian terrorists carried out a chemical attack in the heart of London.
From a pretty sick point of view, players witnessed the attack through the video camera of a father, as his daughter and her mother played the part of tourists. As the child approaches a van recently parked and abandoned, an explosion rocks the street and gas engulfs the stricken family.
Given the London underground battle involved in the mission, negativity came from its perceived similarities with the 7/7 London bombings. The controversy even reached the UK parliament, where one MP stated, "This house is deeply concerned about the recently released video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, in which players engage in gratuitous acts of violence against members of the public."
Call of Duty's habit for chemical attacks continued into its latest release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, where it can be seen in the game's online mode.
The 2019 release was criticised for its inclusion of white phosphorus strikes as an online killstreak reward. Given the nature of protocols which prohibit its use near populated locations, the use of the chemical as a weapon against opponents in the game understandably drew criticism, with a U.S marine even speaking out on the controversial addition. Maybe stop pissing off parliaments and Marines hey Activision?
