Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 - 10 Past Mistakes Activision Can't Repeat

2. Only Do Side-Missions If They're Important

Black Ops 2 and Infinite Warfare are the two biggest COD games to implement proper side quests so far, but unfortunately the results of both were mixed to say the least.

BO 2's side content was enjoyable enough, but only had the pretence of adding to the overall plot, having little variety in terms of mission structure and objectives. Infinite Warfare's side content fared a touch better, being far more expansive and for the most part prioritising great, player-controlled spaceship battles. While better though, even they felt a little unsubstantial in the grand scheme of things, and occasionally got in the way of the title's time-sensitive plot.

This additional content isn't inherently a bad thing, but going forward Treyarch needs to find a way to implement it in a more substantial way that connects it directly to the main plot. Maybe they don't have to be segmented missions at all, and could spin off from the core campaign shootouts the series is known for.

There's scope for COD's single-player to be more expansive, and previous developers have shown that they're willing to try and make that a reality, but Black Ops 3 should only go bigger if it knows it can go better.
