Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Review - 8 Ups & 4 Downs

2. The Graphics Are Wildly Inconsistent

In fairness, few fans love the Call of Duty franchise for its visuals first and foremost, and as such the series is well-known for favouring a consistent frame-rate over lavish textures and jaw-dropping effects.

Even so, it's a bit of a shame just how inconsistent the game is from a graphical perspective. While the core multiplayer maps look relatively good for the most part, Blackout's image quality is drastically scaled back, presumably in order to accommodate the 100-player load without a hiccup.

It's an understandable concession to a point, though it's hard to deny that even basic textures of doors and incidental objects look genuinely quite ugly in Blackout, with a low-poly garishness that makes the game seem rather dated.

While previous CoD games at least used their campaign modes to showcase what the IW engine was really capable of, the absence of a story mode contributes to making Black Ops 4 the most aesthetically unremarkable entry into the series in quite some time.
