5. The Campaign Is Split Between Two Perspectives

Though Call of Duty has moved away from the trend this generation, the franchise used to be defined by its expansive view of war. Rather than tasking you as a lone hero, the first games, including the Modern Warfare titles, instead made players a cog in the machine, putting them into the shoes of different soldiers on different sides of the same conflict.

Thankfully, as is series tradition, this multiple-perspective approach to the storytelling is returning in Modern Warfare. In the campaign, you'll be playing as two different sets of characters; Tier-1 special-force operatives and rebel Middle-Eastern fighters. Speaking of the decision, the single-player director said:

“If we whitewash it, if we backpedal from it, if we show a world where the heroes fight the terrorists and win, you never see the impact on the average person, the collateral damage, or the morally gray situations that soldiers themselves have to face.”

According to reports, the split between the two perspectives will be pretty substantial, making up half of the story each, and both coming with their own personal, emotional narratives. Infinity Ward's manipulation of multiple characters has delivered amazing moments of subversion across the series, and hopefully it will be embraced just as much here.
