Though most video games live or die on the iconic appeal of their protagonist, it's also common for their charming, colourful and otherwise unforgettable sidekicks to win their own passionate cult of fandom.
A great sidekick can not only provide crucial tactical support to the player in a time of need, but serve as an amusing companion during downtime, and in special cases even enjoy significant character development in their own right.
On the other end of the spectrum, though, there are equally iconic sidekicks and support characters infamous for their irritation factor - for their tendency to slow the player down and basically be generally useless. Yet as much as you might hate them, you probably still remember most of their names.
And so, scouring some of the most beloved video game franchises of all time, how well do you remember the littler people (and creatures) providing invaluable aid and infuriating annoyance to the hero?
The answers are at the end, as ever, so best of luck!
