There are plenty of mods that attempt to replicate
filmic techniques, turning a game into a more cinematic experience, or creating
a more realistic atmosphere. Many of these mods do a fantastic job, but few are
as committed to the cause as ‘Pure Ambiance’, a mod which utilises numerous
effects in order to turn Dark Souls 3 into an exceptionally grittier
experience.
The mod predominantly affects the game’s depth of field, subtly obscuring anything beyond the foreground, much like how a movie might utilise shallow focus in order to concentrate the audience’s attention.
It also introduces camera-shake, an effect which will cause the camera to tremble as the player engages in combat, or as the player sprints around the environment, as seen in anything directed by Paul Greengrass (like the latter Bourne movies).
When combined with certain other mods, namely ‘Minimalist
HUD’ by cerberus071984, ‘Pure Ambiance’ can be used to create a more realistic
experience. It’s certainly not for everyone, but if you’ve already completed
the game several times, it might be worth a go.
