The best first boss that the series has ever produced, Iudex Gundyr is an easy enough encounter, but challenging enough to introduce the player to the difficulty of the game.

He is balanced perfectly for an opening boss and also introduces the idea of bosses having multiple phases which is a common theme throughout the game.

Where Asylum Demon was a lesson in being properly equipped in regards to weapons, Iudex Gundyr focuses on equipping the player with the necessary skills to play the game. And for that reason, he is the best starting boss in the series.
