Destiny 2 Reviews: 11 Critical Reactions You Need To Know
10. The Story Is A Massive Improvement
"If you can tell me exactly what happened in Destiny’s campaign — without resorting to Google or the Grimoire, the lore cards that weren’t even in the actual game — then you deserve a prize...Bungie’s writers stepped up their game in Destiny’s expansions, and they’ve taken another stride forward in Destiny 2... I don’t want to oversell the story here; it’s a standard sci-fi tale with familiar tropes and roles. But it provides a suitable framework to explain what you’re doing in the campaign." - Polygon
"So far it's a clear improvement over Destiny's much-maligned storytelling...Rather than being thrust into situations with little to no context, as was so often the case in Destiny, each mission of the Red War arc has objectives that make sense within both the mission itself and the grand scheme." - Gamespot
The first game's story was an effortless also-ran that gave the player incredibly little reason to care, to the point that you'd have been forgiven for zoning out or checking your phone during cut-scenes.
Destiny 2's plot may not be one for the ages, but it is a distinct improvement, carving out palpable character motivations on both sides of the table, not banishing the lore to Grimoire cards outside of the damn game, and delivering an exciting and intriguing if relatively familiar space opera romp.
