Developing Android Games For TV
Next up, in a long but fact pact session, Sameer Baroova from Playjam discussed the growing trend regarding Android games being developed for use on televisions. The idea of developing games in this way, at a time when theres a shift towards mobile gaming may seem counter intuitive, but Baroova thinks theres plenty of life in this more traditional approach yet.Gaming on smart phones is more popular than any other successful gaming platform ever; platforms, demographics and game designs have all diversified and the TV games industry has slowed. Phones are convenient, games are low cost, require little power consumption and come in quick iterations while TV on the whole is often for the more hardcore gamer. Though as Android game development evolves, theres a sense it could come full circle as this low cost, developer-friendly approach is being used to power TV gaming.Baroova mentioned controllers like Green Throttle, Ouya, Nvidia Shield and Gamestick are or are due to be used for this purpose, for some, eliminating the need to have an expensive phone. Retailers are already engaged in the process, developers seem on board and pre orders are strong. Not thought to be just an experiment, trends suggest that consumers are ready to pay for this kind of product.Further positives appear to be the lack of restriction in terms of what the controller can be, be it traditional or even a smart phone. Gaming in this more traditional way could also see a return of longer sessions as well as multiplayer gaming.
