4. Diablo 3: The Wrath of The Fallen
The first and most obvious direction a Diablo 3 expansion would lead is directly through the enraged path of Imperius, the Archangel of Valor. Imperius is a member of the Angiris Council the governing body of angels and is purported to be the greatest warrior in all of creation. Take that impressive resume and consider he vehemently despises the existence of the Burning Hells and anything spewed forth from said bowels. The only thing this guy does better than hate demons, is kill them. In the Diablo universe, humanity is the literal offspring of angels and demons who tried to put aside their differences and spread the love. For Imperius, this is a problem. He considers humanity an abomination and regularly voices his concern over its continued existence. So imagine his frustration in the last act of Diablo 3, when a former angel leads a band of humans into Heaven to try and stop Armageddon. Channeling his anger in your general direction, Imperius proclaims the coming apocalypse is the fault of your misbegotten kind. He leaves you with the promise that the next time you meet, hes going to kill you. Unsurprisingly, moments before the final encounter in the game, Imperius appears with a squad of angelic hit men. He warned you what would happen if you continued to pervert the High Heavens with your presence, and now its about to get real except it doesnt. Thanks to the conveniently timed destruction of what is best described as a giant angelic battery the source of all their power Imperius and his posse of angels collapse. You leave him lying there, powerless on the floor while you pop off to accomplish something hes been attempting since the dawn of time, the destruction of the Prime Evil. That's it, that's the end of his story! We close the chapter on the greatest warrior in all creation, how exactly? Oh, face down, helpless and neutered? Seriously? Once the Light is ultimately restored to the heavens, the damage undone and the angels rejuvenated, there's simply no mention of the Archangel of Valor. Though one could assume hes fairly upset. Probably a little embarrassed, too. This all fits in with a core underlying theme in the Diablo franchise, the power of corruption. How the road to hell is paved with good intentions and how dangerously we flirt with that damnation without ever knowing it. For Imperius, his anger, arrogance and bitter scorn toward humanity has seemingly set the first stone in that road.
