DOOM Reviews: 10 Early Reactions You Need To Know

6. Focus Is On Arcade Gunplay And 90s Throwbacks

"It rips out the heart of 90's Doom and and shoves it down a glorious modern game engine. I like that the game doesn't take itself too seriously and just aims to provide a good time." - Hoetz (Steam Review)
"Doom 2016 is the right blend of action, exploration and visceral excitement. A soundtrack that booms during the high moments of combat, and one that fills the atmosphere with tension during it's slower moments. The pacing has been excellent, still gaining weapons and meeting new demons nearly six hours into the campaign." - Moon Marooned (Steam Review)

Do one, Battlefield, Call of Duty and Halo, you can keep your 'narrative development', your quick-time events and your sporadic cutscenes taking over in between each set-piece.

For DOOM's grand return, the focus is on great-feeling shooting, first and foremost.

Id Software want to transport older gamers back to that first time they unleashed the minigun on a room full of enemies, or for newer players, what it should feel like to play with the biggest and most impressive weapon set ever put into a shooter.

Bethesda provide the publishing clout and requisite funds, and Id Software the gore-soaked power fantasies. It's a match made in heaven.
