E3 2016: 9 Things To Expect From Spider-Man On PS4

1. VR Could Factor In

Spider-Man Homecoming Game
Sony

I'm just about as sick of virtual reality as everyone else is right now, so if all these rumblings of a Spidey title ultimately boil down to a glorified tech demo for the PlayStation VR, it would probably be the biggest disappointment since Star Wars: 1313 was canned.

We already know that the rumour of an untitled PS4 Spider-Man game originated from the now pulled CV of a motion-capture performer who had worked with the prolific Blur studios, who are pretty much the go-to guys when you want to make something look amazing whilst being wholly unrepresentative of the final product you're aiming for. Here's where it all gets interesting however, as Blur are no strangers to the Spider-Man license. In fact, they worked on both credits sequences for Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man films, so that alone adds fresh impetus to the prospect of a current-gen Spidey project moving forward.

If you can recall the first trailer for 2012's Amazing Spider-Man - the one that featured a first-person perspective of the hero swinging through the rooftops of NYC - that could easily offer indication of where this is going; could it likely be that all we're getting is a demo for PS VR?

It would make sense, especially considering one of the most widely praised aspects of the Andrew Garfield reboot was its impressive sense of momentum in dealing with the acrobatics and web-slinging antics of the friendly neighbourhood vigilante. Taking into account the current banal state of Sony's stab at the VR market too, Spider-Man would be just the thing to stoke anticipation ahead of its release. We hope it's not the case, but it wouldn't be the first time that fan expectations were ultimately dashed by an irreverent E3 anticlimax.

If it was the case, Microsoft would really have nothing to worry about. If it's not the system-seller like inFamous or Uncharted are, then fan outrage and critical backlash will be of little consequence to the rivals. Neither company will lose out, but it's hard not to sense the impending disappointment of such an announcement taking place, if any does at all. In either case, I very much doubt that fans will have their Spidey-Senses tingling with excitement come Sony's press conference, even if a Spidey title could indeed be on the horizon.

Do you think Sony's Spider-Man title is coming our way? Or does everyone need their Spider-Sense adjusting? Be sure to post in the comments below!
