E3 2016: Resident Evil 7 Gets P.T.-Like Gameplay, Has Major VR Component

Remember the Silent Hills teaser? Because Capcom certainly do.

It was quite the understated announcement at the show - mostly thanks to some shoddy live camerawork and the fact that for the most part, the footage looked more like P.T./Silent Hills than anything else - but Resident Evil 7 is now confirmed.

Most interestingly though, the entire game can be played through with a PS VR headset, although it's not a necessity - donning the headgear kicks the game into first-person, rather than the supposed standard view we've grown accustomed to across the franchise.

A good chunk of Sony's conference was devoted to PS VR overall, although it must be said, viewing dilapidated households and worn-down corridors in first-person will instantly remind any horror fan of P.T./Silent Hills. The general vibe I got was Capcom surely recognising their biggest rival franchise is nowhere to be seen in 2016, and they'll be aiming to capitalise in full.

That said, reverting the series back to more of an over-shoulder (and occasionally isometric) view will please thousands of old-school fans, the generally 'realistic' aesthetic (save for blood-dripping zombies) hopefully meaning that none of the gung-ho action flair that dogged Resi's 5 and 6 will be present.

Whatever happens, at time of writing gameplay demos are happening on the show floor, so we'll know more soon. As for taking stock right now though, Resident Evil 7 is finally happening, and it should put the series' horror aspects back to the forefront of its reputation.
