In an announcement even more eyebrow-raising than Keanu Reeves joining Cyberpunk 2077, Microsoft revealed that much-loved MMORPG Phantasy Star Online 2 was finally getting a western release, some 7 years after it first landed in Japan, as a free-to-play game next spring for Xbox One and PC.

Though Sega has confirmed that this version of the game will feature micro-transactions, they are promising not to give non-paying players a limited experience, nor allowing a "pay-to-win" model for those keen to throw some cash at it.

Needless to say, for western fans of the series, this pretty much amounted to a low-key megaton, even if it's reasonable to be slightly sceptical about the free-to-play model. Still, it's coming!
