Elder Scrolls Online: 13 Key Tips To Keeping Us All Playing

7. Mod Compatibility

Skyrim's strongest moment was most likely when users started making, installing and using mods. Some changed the game drastically, others made subtle changes but with the top 10 mods having accumulated over 36 million downloads in total, there's something to be learnt: mods are basically free-roam DLC, they allow users to customise their experience to their heart's content without ruining the core gameplay too much as they have the freedom to remove mods whenever they want. TESO with mods would be extremely difficult to do, given that some users wouldn't have the same content, some mods may clash with others, and certain areas would not be available to others. But there are ways around this however; Bethesda could make it so that mod-content is only visible to those who have the specific mods installed, perhaps launch a server that's dedicated to modded clients or even dedicate certain game-changing content to a specific area. When it comes to visual/graphical mods however, they wouldn't have to affect the game in any way. It could be as simple as installing a set of high-definition textures or a set of shader modifications or even just a texture overhaul to change the look of objects and other items. In any case, the possibility to mod your client would be a game-changer for MMOs and for Bethesda and they would certainly end up with the upper hand.
