4. John Marston - Red Dead Redemption
One of the most straight-laced protagonists in Rockstar's history, John Marston still manages to eclipse many of his more morally conflicted counterparts, without having to rely on stereotypically "dark" traits such as anger issues or extreme sadism. He's a gentleman first and foremost, a man loyal to his wife and polite to most. His chequered past is explained in almost Robin Hood fashion; sure, he was a criminal, but one who only committed such crimes to bring about social change in the wild west. All in all, John's a fundamentally good character, a huge rarity in a Rockstar universe. It's therefore such a shame that Red Dead Redemption had to end the way it did... For the uninitiated, RDR ends with the shocking death of Marston, gunned down by his long term nemesis after settling back down with his family. The game does a brilliant job of making the player legitimately care about his fate, and the scene in which he is mercilessly riddled with bullets can be genuinely heartbreaking.
