5. Claude - GTA III

How can a character with no lines of dialogue be so high on this list? By being the most iconic protagonist in Rockstar history - that'll do it. Claude is the ultimate example of a character gaining popularity by being entirely enigmatic, not even having a name until a small role in San Andreas. Nameless, unremarkable in appearance, and completely closed from a personality point of view, he still managed to capture the hearts of an entire gaming community. Of course, part of Claude's appeal is that his "everyman" features make it easier for the player to project themselves into the game, but his actual character (or lack thereof) has a role to play too. He's a very cool guy, especially when contrasted with the various emotionally explosive characters populating the rest of the franchise - fellow protagonists included.
