Ryu Ga Gotoku: Kenzan! was the first game in the series to be released for the PlayStation 3; one of the longest stays on a system this series had. As the first technological leap in the franchise, it did have some growing pains and minor bumps along the road.

In terms of positives, the game takes place in Edo-era Japan and much like every Yakuza/LaD, the developers have painstakingly rendered the open world with love and attention. Kenzan's story involves real-life Japanese figures which will interest history buffs, appearing in the form of series mainstays like Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima.

But as the first PS3 entry, the game's problems soon start to show. Combat is repetitive and lacks depth, while boss encounters take a huge spike in difficulty. Substories and mini-games also feel too tedious which is a big no-no, as these are one of the many key features in any Yakuza game.

Despite this, Kenzan! deserves credit for its beautifully rendered setting which serves as a nice change of pace. Though it is lacking from a gameplay standpoint, the title shows how much the developers were willing to experiment.
