Fable Reboot Wishlist: 5 Things We Want (And 5 We Don't)

8. Do: Classic Fable Humour

Fable 4
Lionhead Studios

Gaming as a medium has always been inherently fun, as even the most challenging game owes its success in the end to how much fun the player has whilst completing it. Fable for many is an embodiment of this concept: a simple fun game, and a lot of that comes down to the humour.

The fact that the games were developed by English company Lionhead made the humour inherently feel sarcastic and British, and as they went along this humour was improved and expanded.

Casting well-known voice talent who had comedy experience helped with the line delivery. The scenarios the player was placed in also led to player choices that gave touches of comedy via miscommunications and great scripted moments.

There is criticism thrown at the game for contrasting the incredibly dark elements too often with the humorous, but this is underestimating the impact that featuring both sides of the coin can have for player enjoyment in a series. Keep the darkness but more importantly, keep the humour, and let them compliment each other.

The trailer announcement made it clear that Playground games have this in mind, as the final moments for the fairy character we meet had many viewers knowing it was a Fable game before the title card even appeared.
