Fable Reboot Wishlist: 5 Things We Want (And 5 We Don't)

9. Don’t: A poor menu screen

Fable 4
Microsoft

It feels strange to have to ask for a decent menu screen for a game, as this element is usually something that bares minimal impact on gaming experiences. The pause menu is purely a mechanical feature and has no bearing on the game, yet somehow the fable franchise has always struggled with it.

Within the first and second game, it was simple, and pretty well designed respectively, suiting the world and aesthetic of the games. Yet, mechanically they faltered, for some reason struggling to run efficiently. This bore a lot of player confusion as a menu screen hardly seems like an aspect of a game that would barely be able to run without lag.

This problem was only magnified in the sequel, where the pause menu was eradicated, and instead, players were given a gameplay element to replace it, in the role of The Sanctuary; a working room filled with options what should appear in a menu.

It was a bold and brave choice to make, and player interest was clearly at mind. The designers at Lionhead perhaps thought they'd take a risk and make something never done in a video game before, unfortunately, it did not pay off. Sometimes it's best to keep things simple and functioning.
