FIFA 13 Demo Reaction: 5 Improvements That Make It Best Football Game Ever

The beautiful game has never been rendered so painstakingly.

For a lot people, reading this preview won€™t sway your opinion/obsession in the slightest or deter you from devoting a good portion of the next 12 months to mastering FIFA 13. It is a franchise with such large, fanatical support that immense profits for EA are a foregone conclusion every year. The great thing is that EA loves you guys too. They appreciate, they listen and they innovate. I must admit that PES used to be the disc most likely to burn out due to over-use in my PS3, but that changed with last season€™s FIFA instalment. The beautiful game rendered so painstakingly in the greatest football game ever, FIFA 12. Needless to say, I am not alone in waiting with baited breath for this year€™s release. Is it better? Can it get better? Judging by the demo, here are 5 things that they have improved upon last year:

1. Animations

The Impact Engine has all grown up. Introduced last year, now in FIFA 13 each tackle, mid-air battle or shoulder charge is tangible, visceral and real. It gives players like Terry, Vidic and Lescott more impact in a game by highlighting the virtues of strength as opposed to speed when it comes to defending. Without question it is still challenging to defend, which only heightens the sense of realism.

2. Presentation

It is even more dynamic. FIFA can even comment on real-life news items in the new Match Day mode to give the commentary an extra scope of realism. In truth, they nailed it so well last time that it was already close to perfection. The crowd noises, stadium design all make the perfect backdrop for the action. Referees were somewhat erratic last year, sometimes making mistakes (where have we seen that before) and this trend has pleasingly continued. Again, creating another layer of realism to the experience.
