8. Vincent Kompany, 85
Ask anybody who the best central defender in the Premier League is and this colossus will surely be the first name on their lips, especially after his performances last year. The Manchester City captain inspired his team to their first league title in 44 years, and without Kompany leaping high to head home the winner in the Manchester derby the final day drama against QPR would never have come to pass and the red half of Manchester would have been celebrating on that memorable last day of the season. Under Kompany's direction City's defence was the most miserly in the division, letting in only 29 goals, and although 85 is a high rating, Kompany's class requires that he be up with or even above the big boys such as Nemanja Vidic (89), Sergio Ramos (87) and Thiago Silva (87).
