3. Xabi Alonso - Bayern Munich
One of the classiest midfielders in recent memory, Xabi Alonso could well be looked back on as one of the all-time greats when his career comes to a close. Age is an obvious issue in terms of snapping him up on a free - he'll be 35 by January - but I'd recommend deploying him deeper and reaping the benefits.
The Spaniard has decent enough defensive stats to command a deep-lying midfield birth, and obviously shines in terms of passing and long shots. Plus, he just seems like a really decent bloke.
