FIFA 20 Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
7. Volta (Up)
OK, so at some stage over the summer, someone told you that the new FIFA had Indoor Mode back in it, just like it had in FIFA '97 - the best version of the game. Well, it sort of does, and it’s called Volta. Sort of a big mesh of indoor mode, FIFA street (remember that?!) and The Journey, Volta consists of a few different modes and massively helps the overall replayability of the game.
The thrust here is short, small, games that emphasize close control and flair in tight arenas. 3v3s and 4v4s full of clever flicks and passes that rebound off graffitied walls, all to a banging soundtrack with really distinctive-looking players. It's insane fun even if, like with the ball physics, it doesn't quite feel like it's finished yet.
The story mode element of it is a bit of a drag though. Far shorter than The Journey it's replacing, it's largely just long-winded cutscenes and match situations you almost feel like you're not allowed to use. Updates for this would be welcome, although a remaking of Nike's famous Scorpion advert would surely be a license to print money.
