FIFA 21 Review: 6 Ups & 7 Downs

2. FUT Has Strangled The Series

If you're anything like the guy writing this, then you've long-since tired of Ultimate Team's dizzying mix of microtransactions and grinding. A mode that once seemed like a nice complement to others has become EA's focal point. There's one reason and one reason only: MONEY.

EA are a business, sure, but there's something so hollow about FUT. It's a titan that's been not-so-gently strangling the franchise for years now, and that won't change whilst it still rakes in mountains of coin. At this point, it'd be a blessing if EA released FIFA Ultimate Team 21 as its own game and dumped other modes in a separate, budget-priced release.

21's mode is much the same as before. You either pay real money for card packs to unlock the best players, or you slog through endless matches in the hope of maybe snagging someone good for a few games. The pressure to pay even more money for a product you've already bought is wearying.

It's an automatic 'Down' every time.
