FIFA 23 Review: 8 Ups & 6 Downs

3. Revamped Set Pieces

FIFA 23 Free Kick
EA Sports

Corners were far too ineffective in FIFA 22. Honestly, scoring from one was more pot luck than a display of skill, and that's just rubbish when so many real-world teams covet coaches who can put together strong set pieces. These situations have never been as important in FIFA...

...until now.

EA have changed the way such vital moments work. Penalties remain troublesome, but free kicks and corners offer more control than ever before. Now, you get to decide exactly which part of the ball your player hits, and shots/crosses actually seem to hit their intended targets with way more accuracy.

Like with any change in mechanics, it's a bit fiddly at first. Stick with it and you'll appreciate the change - seriously, chipping in a corner for your towering centre backs has never been so fun. New flourishes, like putting a player in your wall on the deck to stop low shots, are welcome too.
